Joint Development of Mutant Mice
with Asian-Pacific Researchers

As a part of our mission, we actively collaborate with investigators in academia in the Asia-Pacific region to develop genetically engineered mice (GEM) as a resource for life science research. In this collaborative mission, LARGE at RIKEN BDR will generate GEM, and the role of the collaborating investigators is to propose genes of interest and to characterize phenotypes. It is requested that collaborating investigators cover a part of costs involved in the process:

LARGE recommends the GEM to be shipped as frozen embryos to avoid a risk of microbiological contaminations and to minimize complications in live animal shipment. However, if the collaborating investigator does not have technical support of handling cryopreserved embryos for rederivation, LARGE can accommodate preparation and shipment of live mice with an extra charge. We will arrange international shipments of cryopreserved embryos or live mice via World Courier <www.world courier.com>. It is requested that the investigator cover all the shipping cost.

In addition

  1. The investigator must agree and arrange to receive the embryos/mice that are prepared under the RIKEN BDR’s microbiological standards (https://large.riken.jp/policy/jp).

  2. The investigator must agree to include designated members of LARGE as coauthors in the first relevant publication describing the generation and characterization of the GEM resulting from the collaboration. LARGE must be given an opportunity to review the draft manuscript for consent before its submission and publication.
  3. In any publications reporting the use of the GEM, they must be described with the Accession Number (Acc. No.) assigned by LARGE and its specified website.
  4. After publication of the first relevant paper about the GEM, the strain will be deposited to RIKEN BioResource Center (BRC). The mice will be distributed to researchers around the world upon requests under the conditions that the collaborating investigator can define in part. Third parties receiving the requested GEM will also be asked to cite the first relevant publication, and to describe the GEM with the assigned Acc. No. and the specified website.
